What is the ADKAR management model?

ADKAR management tool is a model for change management.

It is based on five phases which are:

  • Awareness
  • Desire
  • Knowledge
  • Ablity
  • Reinforcement

And the initials thus make up ADKAR.

Awareness is the awareness of change. In other words, we must understand and recognize the need for a change. Therefore, it is crucial that everyone understands why this new activity or change is necessary. If you skip this area, you will experience resistance later on and the "cost" will be far greater than by ensuring this understanding and recognition.

Desire is about the desire to be part of this change. It's not just young people who want a purpose - we all want to see ourselves as a whole. No one likes change unless we have invented it ourselves. That's why involvement is crucial for success.

Knowledge includes the knowledge of being able to change. A knowledge that arises from the above two phases or that is acquired through teaching and learning. We must have the prerequisites and the necessary knowledge to be able to make the desired change.

Ablity refers to the ability to implement and master the new reality, in other words, we must also be able to execute the change. When it doesn't happen, the answer to why it doesn't happen is always found in the previous three phases. And very often the reason is hidden in phase one.

Reinforcement is about anchoring the change. It's about good old-fashioned follow-up, praise, recognition and sparring so that everyone working with the change feels recognized and appreciated.

ADKAR starts with each individual, as studies show that each of us has a crucial role to play in successful change.

MakeMyStrategy™ takes the ADKAR model into account so you can handle all five phases.
